★Origin of China’s National Day★
On October 1, 1949, the founding ceremony of the Central People’s Government of the People’s Republic of China, known as the Founding Ceremony, was held in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square. “The earliest proposer of ‘National Day’ was Mr. Ma Shulun, then a member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and chief representative of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).”
On October 9, 1949, the First National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference held its first meeting. Member Xu Guangping spoke, “Member Ma Xulun, who was on leave and could not come, asked me to say that the founding of the People’s Republic of China should be celebrated on a national day, so he hoped that this Council would decide to designate October 1 as a national day.
On December 2, 1949, the resolution adopted at the fourth meeting of the Central People’s Government Committee stated: “The Central People’s Government Committee hereby proclaims that from 1950 onwards, October 1 of each year, the great day on which the People’s Republic of China was proclaimed, shall be the National Day of the People’s Republic of China.”
